Live Music Returns to Oregon’s Adventure Coast!
Music to Our Ears: The Oregon Coast Music Association Announces a Return to Live Music With OCMA Outdoors!
It’s been a long, lonely, year without live performances, but thankfully organizations like the Oregon Coast Music Association (OCMA) will finally provide us with relief this summer! Since 1979, the Oregon Coast Music Association has involved, enriched and inspired the community by providing quality classical music and creative musical experiences. However, like most organizations, the OCMA had to put their mission on hold during the pandemic.
The OCMA recently announced that orchestra members and community partners will present outdoor musical festival events during the weekends of July 17-18, 2021 and July 24-25, 2021 (that is literally music to our ears)! Though this year’s events will be slightly different from the traditional performances associated with the Oregon Coast Music Festival (OCMF), the spirit of the festival will be as bright and beautiful as ever. In addition, the Coos History Museum Plaza Stage , a new venue, will be introduced to the community! Here’s a rundown of this year’s events:
Saturday, July 17, 2021:
OCMA Presents The Bay Area Concert Band & The Shaymus Hanlin Quartet at Mingus Park.
The Bay Area Concert Band & The Shaymus Hanlin Quartet will provide the traditional festival opening concert at the Mingus Park Amphitheater. This year, this event will be a double treat. Bay Area Concert Band Conductor Simpkins has selected several band classics to entertain audiences in the first set, including the Ellington/Cacavas - Sophisticated Ladies with a Wilbur Jenson solo.
Also, featured with the band will be special guest Shaymus Hanlin singing Gershwin’s “But Not for Me.” The second set features the Shaymus Hanlin Quartet with Wes Georgiev, keyboard, Liam Hathaway, bass, and Michael Rodenkirch, percussion, and Hanlin on vocals performing selections from the great American Songbook. Bring a chair or blanket and enjoy that picnic afternoon concert. *This performance begins at 12 p.m. Tickets are Free (Donations Accepted).
Sunday, July 18, 2021:
OCMA Presents Rose Canyon Harmonie at the Coos History Museum Plaza Stage Rose Canyon Harmonie performs on Sunday, July 18th at 2 p.m. This unique reed quintet features Thomas Schubert, bassoon; Mike Gaby, oboe; Mark Margolies, clarinet; Steve Shields, saxophone; and Robert Zelickman, bass clarinet. The quintet offers a program of music from the baroque, classical and romantic eras, as well as innovative contemporary pieces written specifically for the reed quintet. *This performance begins at 2 p.m. Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased in advance.
Saturday, July 24, 2021:
OCMA Presents Pioneer Trombones at the Coos History Museum Plaza Stage The trombone and percussion ensemble includes brass artists Andrew Harris, David Bryan, Phil Neuman, Gayle Neuman, and Dan Stueber on percussion. They will perform popular music of the Americas, with emphasis on South America’s contributions, with music by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Astor Piazzola, arranged by Phil Neuman. The group will play works by jazz composers Kenny Dorham, Joe Zawinul and Chick Corea. Selections from ragtime and big band styles round out this entertaining mix of trombone quartet “chamber music”. *This performance begins at 2 p.m. Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased in advance.
Sunday, July 25, 2021:
OCMA Presents The Festival Viola Quartet and The Carlos Ensemble at the Coos History Museum Plaza Stage.
The Festival Viola Quartet and The Carlos Ensemble will close the series. The Festival Viola Quartet composed of Shelley Mathewson, Cynthia Scott, Brenda Liu, and Sharon Eng provide the first portion of this double concert afternoon. They perform a collection of classical and non-classical pieces, certain to delight the audience with the lovely timbres of the violas. The Carlos Ensemble with Stephen Chong, Anthony Dyer, Shelley Mathewson, and Dale Bradley will present the wrap up finale. They will perform various Pop, Broadway and familiar tunes, bringing much joy to the community! *This performance begins at 2 p.m. Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased in advance.

In other musical performance news, we’re looking forward to In a Landscape: Classical Music in the Wild, a one-of-a-kind musical experience featuring a 9 ft Steinway piano, to Shore Acres State Park August 10-11, 2021. This is a wonderful opportunity for an audience to enjoy live music safely in an outdoor space where they can socially distance.
