Prefontaine Letter to be
revealed at Olympic Trials

June 26th, 2008

Coos Bay, OR – In an effort to share Steve Prefontaine’s hometown history, the Coos Bay – North Bend Visitor & Convention Bureau (VCB) will be part of the festival activities at the Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon. They, along with the Mill Casino Hotel and 75 coastal volunteers, will showcase their love of the area, promote the annual Prefontaine Memorial Run in Coos Bay, and share a part of Pre’s history. Linda Prefontaine, Steve’s sister will also be making an appearance to speak to the public and share stories on Saturday, June 28th from 10am – 2pm and July 5th, 9am – Noon.

Steve PrefontaineA large section of the booth design is dedicated to Prefontaine, including old photographs, racing programs, newspaper articles and the highlight of their display, a never before published letter written by Steve Prefontaine shortly before his death. The letter dated March 17th, was written to Prefontaine’s Marshfield High School coach, Walt McClure in 1975.

Katherine Hoppe, director of the Coos Bay – North Bend VCB said, “When Walt first brought the letter to me, I was afraid to even touch it, I was in awe. We’ve actually had a copy of it for months but have been waiting for just the right time to release it. With the opportunity to participate in the Eugene 08 festivities, we couldn’t think of a better time or place to share this letter.”

Pre writes of his training with Frank Shorter in Denver, of his battle with the AAU, getting ready for “the Finn” and of his intentions to begin training for the 76 Olympics.

Prefontaine LetterThe letter will be at the Mill Casino / Oregon’s Adventure Coast booth during festival hours and available for download here.
